The Breathtaking Scenic Drive Through Maine That Runs Along Muscongas Bay

Pretty much every drive you take in Maine is going to be scenic. Our state is so beautiful that we’re rarely short on breathtaking scenery. Sometimes you want to hop in the car just to take it all in. If you’re looking for a lovely drive with a few quaint stops along the way, this scenic drive along Muscongas Bay in Maine is just the thing for you and your family. It’s only a 40-minute drive from Woldoboro to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse if you don’t stop anywhere, but there are so many things to see and do along the way!
Our journey begins in the charming, tiny town of Waldoboro where the Medomak River flows into Muscongas Bay. Start with a slice of Americana and a slice of pie at Moody’s Diner. It’s an old-fashioned coffee shop where you’ll get scrumptious breakfasts and a nice, hot cup of coffee served with friendly hospitality. Having some berry pie or a freshly made Whoopie Pie at Moody’s Diner is the perfect start to a beautiful day.
We’ll take a short hop west on Route 1, hang a left on Kalers Cr. St, continue along Bremen Rd., and in a couple of minutes, we’ll step back into history at The Old German Meeting House. Built in 1772, it’s still standing and was the focus of the community and played a significant part in the establishment of Waldoboro. Step inside the old church and you’ll feel a sense of reverence and history, as you will at the hauntingly beautiful cemetery that surrounds it.
Along this route heading south as Bremer Rd. becomes Waldoboro Rd, you can take just about any side street to the east and end up with a gorgeous view of Muscongas Bay. One lovely stop that leads to the coast is the stunning Hay Conservation and Recreation Area which is covered with pretty wildflowers during the warmer months. A 0.25-mile trail leads to the water and it’s such a splendid way to walk off breakfast while getting breathtaking views of the bay.
Be sure to bring a cooler because you’ll want to pick up some freshly caught seafood at Community Shellfish just a hop down the road from the lovely walk you just took! The oysters, scallops, lobster, clams, and more that you can find here are not only as fresh as can be, but proceeds go toward the local fishing and aquaculture community.
Staying on the same road, we’ll wind around Webber Pond, Round Pond, and will soon find ourselves at Skipjack Nautical Wares & Marine Art Gallery. You’ll adore the nautical-themed relics, antiques, salvage, and art that adorn every square inch of this quaint shop. You can bring home your very own ship in a bottle!
Let’s keep along the same road for a couple of minutes, turn right on Foster Rd., then left on Bristol Rd. As we enter the idyllic coastal town of New Harbor, we'll stop for a treat at Harbor Ice Cream. For over 30 years, locals have been coming here to enjoy scrumptious ice cream with way more flavors than you would think possible for such a tiny shop. With flavors with names like Fly Fishing Fudge, Maine Black Bear, and Maine Moose Tracks, you’ll get a taste of just how sweet Maine can be.
Continuing south, we’ll drive to the end of the road and arrive at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse where awe-inspiring views of the ocean await. Check ahead for hours to see if you can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a small donation. It’s places like this that make Maine such a fantastic place to explore!
