When warmer weather arrives there are always some things Mainers look forward to. Beach trips, lake adventures and, of course, hikes! There are plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors, but that’s not all this state is good for in the summer. Don’t forget things like mini-golf, ice-cream shacks and…drive-in movie theaters! This one is a favorite. And during the summer of 2020 you can expect lots of great throwback movies to take you back in time.
The Saco-Drive in, located in Saco, has been delighting locals and vacationers since 1939. That means it’s officially the oldest drive-in theater in Maine and the third oldest in the country!
We love how local things feel. Surrounded by trees, the screen and the parked cars make things feel small. Almost like you might recognize a friend at the car next to you. And, if you’re from the area, that just might happen.
Expect to pay $15 for one car filled with up to three people. It’s $20 for a car with 4 or more people. If you do that math, that’s almost cheaper than paying for a streaming movie on Amazon!
While cold Maine weather makes this place seasonal, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to pack in the fun when they are open. Plan on visiting from mid-May through September or October. Nothing here is firm since the weather can vary. But they’ll stay open as far into fall as possible.
If you arrive before the show, you’ll be in for another show! The sunsets here are epic and are one of the best ways to prepare for a fun night of entertainment under the stars.
The Saco Drive-In offers a fun schedule of movies that you can see here. You can also follow them on Facebook. Admission is $15. Even if you’re not local to southern Maine, you’ll find plenty of other drive-in options throughout the state. Drive in movie theaters are starting to pop up all over Maine! If you have questions you can reach them on 207-286-3200.
