Blissfully tucked away like America’s best-kept secret, Maine’s breathtaking landscape of rocky coves, pristine Atlantic beaches, and endless lush green forests is a national treasure unlike anywhere else in the country. Whether visiting for a weekend or fortunate enough to call our gorgeous state home, there are countless ways to enjoy the simplicity and fresh, untamed beauty of the great outdoors here!
But of all the parks, lakes, beaches, and photo-worthy destinations you can visit in Maine, there’s one special place nestled on the outskirts of the mainland that offers some of the best ocean views in the state, and it’s an absolute must-visit for any true nature-lover. And catching a sunset here? Sheer perfection.
Schoodic Peninsula is an off-the-radar gem hidden in Acadia National Park with arguably some of the best ocean views in the entire state.
With over 2,000 acres of rugged, rocky scenery and dense forest to explore, as well as incredible ocean views, it's hard to believe that this area is so overlooked. But as the only part of Acadia located on the mainland, Schoodic is easy for the average park visitor to miss.
Here you'll find dozens of campsites (by reservation only), plenty of trails to explore, seclusion from the busier parts of Acadia, and sublime views.
While not as tall as the highpoints of nearby Mount Desert Island, none of the vistas on Schoodic will disappoint, that's for sure! As you explore the peninsula, you can also visit massive volcanic rock formations, quiet coves, and even see the majestic features of MDI in the distance.

But this quiet haven really takes on new magic as the sun begins to set. As the sun sinks lower and lower on the horizon, the rocks take on an unmistakable glow that beckons with its honey warmth.
Tempting though it may be, there's no way (safe or otherwise) to descend most of the sheer cliffs here, and getting too close to the edge could be fatal. Remember to be careful and keep a safe distance at all times, and adhere to any signs or roped off areas.

Schoodic Point, which lies at the end of the loop, offers some of the most vibrant, breathtaking sunset views imaginable.
But the dramatic coastal views from Ravens Nest – which is tucked away near the end of the Schoodic Peninsula Loop - are a photographer favorite. And for good reason!
As the sun descends below the horizon, the features of this rugged outcrop really start to shine in all their glory. The towering rock cliffs create a stunning, rugged frame that adds drama to every sunset.
Of course, Ravens Nest a stunning and secluded destination even in the daytime. But the sunsets here are truly incredible, thanks to the unique natural formations, which start to paint idyllic silhouettes against the sky.
The vibrant, pastel peak of sunset here is truly something to behold! Ravens Nest can be accessed at the third pull off on the loop, where you'll find an unmarked trail on the other side.

Getting to Schoodic is easy, but will take some extra effort. If you're coming from Mount Desert Island, it's a 90-minute drive to the Peninsula.
Or, the Schoodic Ferry runs every few hours during the on-season.
We personally recommend driving, or better yet – biking! It’s a lovely scenic trip, which only gives you a taste of the beauty to come once you hop on the Schoodic Peninsula Loop.
Cruising along the coast, soaking up the smell of salt in the air, the sounds of seagulls, and the rainbow of colors painted on the landscape - all while watching the powerful waves crash against the shore - is unlike anything you've ever experienced.
Your destination will be one hundred percent worth it.
Come for the views, stay for the sun show! From majestic mountains to gorgeous waterfalls, you never know what you’ll discover while exploring our great state. Dreamy doesn’t even begin to describe it! And did you know that Schoodic Peninsula is also a known area for bio-luminescent algae to light up along the shoreline? There truly are countless reasons to add this majestic spot to your bucket list!
