When asked when the most appropriate time is to enjoy ice cream, we’ll always answer the same way. It’s all the time! Unfortunately, in a place like Maine, quite a few of our favorite spots close for the season. But, like all good Mainers, we can find the good in that. During the off season we come up with a list of our favorite spots to get back to when the weather warms — and this one is a favorite!
Red's Dairy Freeze in South Portland has been a fixture on the warm-weather scene in Maine since 1952. That's nearly 70 years of classic ice cream!
Sitting just off of Cottage Road, the location is perfect for those heading to the beach. But it's a can't-miss even if you simply have a sweet tooth that can only be satisfied by a classic treat.
Red's Dairy Freeze is typically among the first ice cream spots to open in the state. When we see the sign, we know summer can't be far behind. This is especially nice since most Mainers know that in March we probably still have many more weeks until reliably warmer temps. But, we're happy to pretend if it means we can enjoy the cups and cones here!
The menu is simple, and displayed in the front. There are two ordering windows and it's common to see two long lines of locals excited about what they'll soon be enjoying.
We also love that so many of their flavors include local, natural ingredients. The strawberries featured in past seasons have been from a farm just down the road.
Whether you like the more involved options or prefer to keep things simple, a stop at Red's Dairy Freeze is a great way to start gearing up for warm weather.
Stop by, indulge, and remember why Maine is a great place to be any time of year.
Red’s Dairy Freeze is open from spring through fall, but exact opening dates will change each year. In 2021 the shop opened in mid-March. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. every day. You can learn more about them by visiting their website. You can stay up-to-date on when they’ll open and close each season by following them on Facebook. They can be reached on 207-799-7506.
