With all the attractions to see in Maine, it might feel like focusing on the big ones is a good strategy. And it might be for some. If you’re visiting and find yourself short on time, we understand seeing things like Acadia, Portland, and the coast. But if you want to delve into the quirkier side of Maine, you’ll want to get off-the-beaten-path and find your way to attractions like this one! And don’t take our word for it. This statue was recently featured on the USA Today list of 60 spots in America to visit before you die. You can see them all here.
Despite rumors that Mr. Bunyan was born here, no one is entirely sure that Paul Bunyan has absolutely anything to do with Maine, let alone the city of Bangor. but we love this looming homage to the man himself nonetheless.
Gifted to the good people of Maine by a group of builders from NYC on the occasion of their 125th anniversary, the statue has been a prominent feature of Bass Park in Bangor since 1959.
Of course, there are statues of Paul Bunyan throughout the country. But this fiberglass covered version is so perfectly painted, so beautifully constructed that he is widely believed to be the most handsome of all the Bunyan statues.
And while it's virtually impossible to test unless you're willing to take a tape measure to them all, most people believe this to be the largest statue of him anywhere in the world.
But! Good news! Head to Rumford where an alternate version of Paul exists and you'll also be treated to Babe.
You might be wondering how this made its way to the USA Today bucket list of places to visit. Honestly, we are too. But let's just appreciate that someone, somewhere has a Mainer's sense of humor and enthusiasm for all things quirky.
The Paul Bunyan statue is located in Bass Park in Bangor. There are no official opening and closing hours. You know, because it’s a…statue. So show up when you can and leave when you’ve seen enough!
