The Oldest General Store In Maine Has A Fascinating History
Hope is more than just an optimistic feeling. It’s a beautiful town in Maine! And it’s the home of one of our oldest general stores.

The town has been around for more than 200 years. It existed as a farming town, then evolved to become a small town outside of the (slightly) larger towns of Camden and Rockland.

South Hope eventually became slightly more accessible with the creation of Route 17 that runs into Rockland. Hope Village, however, remained more sleepy, accessible by the rural Route 105.

Over the past few years, the town has become more lively. And, many people credit the revised version of the Hope General Store as the reason.
The store is located one of the most perfectly "Maine" crossroads you’ll find. The building that serves as it’s home was built in 1832 and served as an epicenter of the town.

Not only was it a place to buy anything you needed for life in Maine, but it was also a Grange hall, an antique store, a general meeting place and a post office.

In fact, it remains a post office today. That means you can stop in to mail a package to your friends in Florida and then chow down on a homemade sandwich.

The store sat empty for a number of years before being brought back to life by new ownership.

It now serves as one of the most loved and visited spots in Hope. It's perfect for takeaway sandwiches, just about any kind of beer you might want and pizza that gets rave reviews.

But, of course, they've also got you covered when it comes to fishing licenses, bait, internet access, and sandwiches.
