One of the things we love the most about our gorgeous state is having so many stunning harbors and other coastal areas with our towering pine trees growing right up to the coast. It’s especially serene and lovely at night when you can see so many stars. In some places, like Castine Harbor, you can even see bioluminescent creatures in the water! Your Maine bucket list would be incomplete without this Bioluminescence Night Paddle Trip with Castine Kayak Adventures.
Castine is an idyllic little town in Maine with a pristine harbor area where locals love to take a boat out and sail or motor around and see astonishing views of the Maine coast.
You’ll see every kind of craft from big old sailing ships to diminutive kayaks. It’s so lovely to see the sunlight glistening off the water and the lush forests on the coast, as well as a tiny town with so much New England character.
When the sun starts to set, many pack it in for the day and head back to shore. However, Castine Kayak Adventures is just getting started on a mesmerizing adventure.
Once it gets dark, an unusual and breathtaking phenomenon takes place in Castine Harbor. Bioluminescent phytoplankton begin to glow under the water and as you paddle around, you’ll be surrounded by them. It's quite difficult to capture the glow in photos, but it's amazingly bright in person!
As you tour the harbor, you’ll be awed and educated about the beauty above you as well as below you. Stargazing is part of the experience and you’ll learn about the constellations that will be brightly visible with very little light pollution in the area.
It is recommended that you already have a bit of experience paddling a kayak before taking this tour and there are daytime options to learn how. There’s even a Day & Night combo package so you can learn to paddle and prepare for the night tour.
