There’s just nothing like summertime in Maine. It might surprise people from other states, but things here can get nice and hot which means we’re all in need of some refreshment. You could head to the beach, but you’d be contending with crowds, parking issues, and frigid water. There are lakes, but that also comes with its own headaches. And that’s why we love how unique this water slide is. But you won’t find this one in an amusement park!
Step Falls Preserve is located in Newry, which is just about on the New Hampshire border. That makes this a great place to stop if you’re located in either state.
There’s a .5-mile hiking trail here that winds through the woods leading directly to the falls, which makes this a bit of an adventure. But, don’t worry too much. The trail is simple to follow, fairly short and without much elevation gain.
The end of the trail will lead you to the base of the falls. Take some time to enjoy the view, then head to the top where you’ll see the rocks here have been smoothed over the centuries to create an almost unbelievably smooth rock bed. And the rushing water has made the rocks slippery. Perfect condition for a water slide!
In addition to the fun of sliding down the falls, there are a number of small pools here where you can simply take a dip to cool off. The water is so clear you can see to the bottom.
Another fun element of this adventure is the slipping and sliding from side-to-side you’ll do as you head down. You have the wide rocks to thank for that!
Not ready to go in, that's okay. It's a beautiful view even from the sidelines. But, mostly just enjoy yourself! This is a fun benefit of being in Maine!
