As we head into summer, we all know that Maine’s got seafood galore. While we’re never ones to skip out on a good lobster roll, we can’t seem to get this burger out of our minds. With juicy meat and a deliciously special sauce, it feels like more than just a burger. Some might call it a gift from heaven. Others might call it the best darn burger they’ve ever had. To find out what it’s all about, go straight to Fat Boy burger in Maine!
It's impossible to miss the sign for Fat Boy Drive-In from the road.
Fat Boy, located in Brunswick, opened on July 29th, 1955. It was the brainchild of John Bollinger and Mr. Campbell who were Chiefs at the Brunswick Naval Air Station. At first, the season ran from March through November and the shop was open from 11am to 1am, seven days a week!
In 1984, Fat Boy came to rest with its current owners. Despite the competition from a certain large, national chain (ahem, McDonald's) Fat Boy stayed true to their Maine roots and continued to thrive.
Today, Fat Boy Drive-In is one of the most recognizable places to eat in the region.
Some say the sauce is a bit like a sweet mayo and while we can't be sure what goes into making it, we CAN be sure that this burger is amazing as a result of its existence.
Once you've got your Whoperburger, fries and frappe sit back and hope for a sunset as glorious as this to round out what was probably the perfect Maine day.
How do we know it was the perfect Maine day? Well, you weren't in Maine weren't you?
