My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
If you are anything like us then you just love when you can maximize a hike. Filling an expedition with beauty, overlooks, waterfalls, fun, and excitement are all high on our list. So when you find a trail that checks everything on that list off you know you are going to have an amazing adventure. Enter Gulf Hagas for some of the most epic and picturesque waterfalls in our state and prepare to get a little wet along the way.
Gulf Hagas will take you along the Appalachian Trail for the first half of the hike and then loop you back around to your car.
This hike is just under nine miles and has an elevation gain of over 950 feet. Along the way, you will have to cross a river and you will most certainly get wet. Shortly after, you will arrive at the most popular of all the waterfalls, Screw Auger Falls. This beautiful waterfall plunges 15 feet into a rock wall punch bowl and the water is clean and clear.
Moving along the trail further, you will arrive at Buttermilk Falls.
As the name would suggest this waterfall cascades down several rocks, making it look like a staircase. That will be the last of the officially named waterfalls in the area, but there are still more unnamed cascades to explore!
Along this loop trail, you will get the chance to see dozens of unnamed cascades and waterfalls.
Gulf Hagas has earned the nickname “The Grand Canyon of Maine,” so that will give you just a little taste of what to expect when you explore this yourself.
Gulf Hagas is filled with adventure waiting for you just south of the Northern Maine Woods. With so many waterfalls and scenic overlooks, this is a must-hike for any avid explorer. If you plan on visiting make sure to bring cash with you, because there is a fee to enter.
