Weekend getaways provide a special place in our imaginations. We have a little time, we want to enjoy ourselves, and we don’t want to feel like the trip is a bunch of work. Enter the rustic and quaint Monson, Maine.
Monson is located in Piscataquis County on Route 15. It has a population of approximately 600 folks and became a town in 1822.
Monson rests at the end of the Appalachian Trail and the beginning of the Hundred-Mile Wilderness. It is well known for the slate found in the area.
First, you’ll want to check into your weekend house. Quarry Cabin #20 is located right on the shores of Lake Hebron. Visit the Airbnb listing page for this beautiful property to book your stay.
This cabin is maintained by the chef and owner of The Quarry Fine Dining Restaurant, a reservation-only establishment well known for its haute cuisine.
A nice way to start any day on vacation is with a treat.
Grab a coffee and a pastry of choice at Abbot Village Bakery, which is a short jaunt from your cabin.
There are plenty of hikes in the area, and they are all beautiful. Many will guide you toward waterfalls, as does the Slate Hills via Appalachian Trail.
This trail is rated moderate with little foot traffic. It is about 13 miles long and offers a variety of things to see. If you go the full distance you will meet up with the Little Wilson Upper Falls.
There is something about approaching a waterfall that is different from anything else.
Sometimes it’s the sound you notice first. Other times you see it well before you notice its particular frequency.
A waterfall encounter feels special.
This one sits in its ecosystem like a charismatic actor stands on stage. Little Wilson Falls provides quite the backdrop.
Waterfalls draw your attention. They welcome your camera.
You can reach this spot while on the 2.5-mile Little Wilson Falls trail rated as moderate. Unlike the route you can take from the Slate Hills Trail, Little Wilson Falls road takes you almost all the way there.
If you are here on Friday, pack your musical instrument of choice and join in with the Monson Jammers.
You are welcome to play along, sing, or watch. Feel free to join this local tradition.
There are plenty of dining options in town.
The Lakehouse Lodge & Pub offers a diverse menu and a great spot to catch a sunset.
Another fine choice for some food and drink is the Spring Creek Bar-B-Q
It's a laid-back vibe with music to match. Rumor has it you will hear a bit of Jerry Garcia if you stay long enough.
There are 12 different waterfalls in Piscataquis County. Even if you only visit one, you will leave the charming town of Monson with plenty of quality memories.
