Located on Peaks Island in Maine, Battery Steele is a former military fort that was used during the second World War to protect Portland Harbor against possible enemy attacks. Because of Battery Steele’s role in history, it was added to the National Registry Listing in 2005.
Today the military fort is part of the Peaks Island Land Preserve and a destination that brings visitors who are curious to check out what remains of Battery Steele. If you have a love of adventure, are a bit of a history buff, and enjoy graffiti art, read on to learn more about what you’ll see when you explore these fascinating military ruins.
To reach Battery Steele, you'll need to take a short ferry ride from Portland. In order to reach these historical ruins, head to the oceanside part of the island, which used to be a part of what was the Peaks Island Military Reservation.
Along with the remaining barracks and fort, some of the fire control towers still exist.
Two of the best ways to get around the small island and to reach the military fort ruins are by golf cart or bike. You can also take a hike from the ferry landing.
After you've explored Battery Steele, take in views like this of the ocean. This is the same vantage point soldiers looked at when they were protecting the country during the Second World War.
