When it comes to food, Maine is primarily famous for lobster. That’s why we love seeing one of our cities named to a list of the best pizza in the USA. This summer, Esquire Magazine rounded up their picks for the best (and worst!) pizza in the country. Along with some obvious choices such as New York and San Francisco, our own beloved Portland graced the pages of the national magazine. We thought it might be fun to expand on this and create our list of some of the best spots in the city to grab a slice. Check these out the next time you’re in need of the perfect slice!
1. Micucci Grocery: 45 India Street, Portland / 207-775-1854
If you want the perfect sicilian slice, you won't find it anywhere in town except Micucci Grocery! Three generations of the Micucci family have devoted their lives to providing the city with the best imported Italian foods. This includes a good wine selection, a full deli and that pizza that we absolutely love! Come here first - before trying anything else. There's a good chance your search will end.
OTTO is a bit of a Portland institution at this point. With lots of locations in the city and in South Portland, there's plenty of opportunity to grab this incredible slice. The Mashed Potato with Bacon and Scallions get rave reviews, as does the Butternut Squash, Ricotta and Cranberry.
There are LOTS of locations in Portland:
Portland, ME:
576 Congress St (Arts District): 207-773-7090
225 Congress St (Munjoy Hill): 207-358-7870
Portland Delivery: 207-358-7551
South Portland, ME:
159 Cottage Road, South Portland, ME 207-517-3051
125 John Roberts Road, South Portland, ME 207-772-0900
This family-operated Vermont pizza hot spot has earned its place in the hearts of Southern Mainers with creative pizzas with specialty ingredients as well as their vegan and vegetarian options.
Even if pizza isn't your thing, you'll love spending time inside this wonderful spot. The ovens warm the room and the community vibe is strong. In fact, we recommend the vegetation Casco Bay Community Flatbread highly!
6. Howie's Pub: 501 Washington Avenue, Portland / 207-347-7107
Howie's is a bit of a hidden gem in Portland. Individual pies are the perfect portion for a hearty (but solo) appetite and the sports-bar feel will keep you in good spirits. Be sure to visit on a Monday when it's 2 for 1 pizza night from 6pm until 11pm. And, try that pickle pizza we've heard so much about! Howie's also hosts trivia and features other food and drink specials.
7. Bonobo Wood Fire Pizza: 46 Pine Street, Portland / 207-347-8267
Not only does Bonobo keep West Enders full of pizza with incredibly fresh ingredients, but the place is super cozy in the winter as a result of their wood fire oven!
Known for their famous "slab," this spot will keep you full for hours. Maybe even days. These unbelievably huge slices come as a meat wedge, a vegetarian mushroom wedge, or a vegan wedge. Slab also offers sandwiches such as muffuletta, monstri meatball subs, and sicilian sandwich cones.
If this has you in a serious Italian mood, check out these spots for some great Italian food in Maine. And, let us know your favorite spots for pizza all over Vacationland!
