Maine has a lot of history. You can learn about a lot of it in the many museums across the state. But what we love most are the tiny unexpected details that provide a glimpse into what life was like long before today. It’s not the artifacts sitting behind glass that do this best. To us, the best way to understand what life was like decades ago is by looking at the things people created to help make their lives easier. This bridge is a great example!
The Androscoggin Swinging Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Androscoggin River in Topsham and Brunswick.
And while it might look like a simple small-town bridge, it actually boasts a very famous maker. It was built by John A. Roebling’s Sons Company, who is responsible for the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City!
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places back in 2014 and today it sees quite a bit of foot traffic as part of the Androscoggin River Walk.
If you give a little shimmy, or experience a gust of wind you're likely to feel the bridge swing! This is what gives the bridge its nickname: The Androscoggin Swinging Bridge.
You can explore the bridge throughout the year. In the fall you'll see some of the most beautiful foliage, but the winter offers some quaint snowy views.
Whenever you visit, you're sure to appreciate the history. And if you don't like your bridges to move, you might consider simply enjoying the views from the shore!
The Androscoggin Swinging Bridge can be accessed from both Topsham and Brunswick. In Brunswick park at the intersection of Mill Street & Cushing Street. In Topsham park at the intersection of Bridge & Prospect Streets. Then just walk across! For more information on the Androscoggin Riverwalk check out the website.
