There are a lot of things that Maine does well, but one of the best is arguably the lobster roll. This perfectly located food truck offers up six different types of lobster rolls. Grab one just before heading off to explore Fort Williams Park and Portland Head. They've already become a Portland legend, but they were also recently included on USA Today's list of Maine/Massachusetts Best Lobster Rolls. This Freeport mainstay has been helping the good people of Southern Maine eat well since 1970. Stroll up to the window, order your fare and watch the boats come in and out of the working waterfront. Visit them at 36 Main Street in South Freeport / 207-865-3535.
Once named "Best Hidden Lobster Shack" by Yankee Magazine, McLoons serves up a lobster roll that is truly the Rolls Royce of rolls. In fact, it even comes with that name. Order one at the window, wait at a picnic table and watch the sun set. Feel free to BYOB to this place and plan on leaving stuffed after a delicious strawberry shortcake. This is another one of the most famous of the lobster shacks in Maine, but fear not - it's for good reason! Red's won't disappoint. There's oftentimes a long wait for a good reason. The lobster rolls here aren't covered in mayo and pieces are large enough to dip directly into the melted butter provided on the side. Visit them at 41 Water Street in Wiscasset / (207) 882-6128
Graffam Bros have been offering up fresh seafood at the market since 1946. The shack was opened across the street to meet the demand of folks who wanted something tasty immediately. This year round fish market has been open since 1978. They sell live Maine lobster, but also serve up a tasty lobster roll. Seafood is hand breaded with some great sides. Visit them at: 728 Main Street in Bangor / (207) 942-7811
The Eagle's Nest in Brewer is famous for one of the best lobster rolls on this list, not to mention their other fresh seafood dishes! And, every Thursday and Friday they'll serve you an all you can eat Haddock Fish Fry for just $11.25. Visit them at: 1016 N. Main Street in Brewer / (207) 989-7635
This place might be well known, but that doesn't mean they've settled into a routine that's made them lazy. The rolls here are priced right and with a location right at the mouth of the Bagaduce River, you'll enjoy a priceless view as well. Visit them at 145 Franks Flat in Penobscot / (207) 326-4197
Becky's food truck is tucked away so if you're not paying attention, you may miss the chance for one of the best lobster rolls in the area. The second best thing about Quoddy Bay Lobster is that it's family owned and operated. The first best thing is the food! They're set to open for their 11th season in business, which means you can stop by for one of their no-filler lobster rolls to enjoy in the outdoor seating area where you'll have views of the Bay of Fundy across to Canada.
