Maine is one of the best states for all things outdoorsy — and that includes waterfall trails! From Angel Falls in Township D to Small Falls in Township E to Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Notch State Park, located in Bethel, Maine, this state is bursting with watery flows. And, one of our favorite lesser-known spots is Little Wilson Falls.
Little Wilson Falls is located near Monsoon and Greenville, Maine in Piscataquis County.
Piscataquis County is a large county in central Maine that is the size of the state of Connecticut. The land in this county is mainly forested, so it’s the perfect destination for anyone who loves the outdoors.
The best way to get to Little Wilson Falls is by hiking Little Wilson Falls Trail.
The trailhead is located in Elliotsville Township, Maine, close to the more well-known town of Monsoon. When driving to the trailhead, it is recommended to use a high-clearance vehicle as the road is full of large potholes and gravel. There is also limited parking at the trailhead, but you'll find many opportunities to park along the way and walk to the trail.

Little Wilson Falls Trail is a small part of the Appalachian Trail and should be hiked with caution.
This trail is ranked moderate in terms of difficulty and is a 2.4-mile roundtrip. The trail is mostly made up of dirt and forest floor, as well as some rock ledges you must utilize during the inclined climb.
The rocks at the falls are perfect for a picnic on a sunny day before you descend back down the trail. Bird watching is also very popular here. Maine is home to a large variety of bird species and many can be seen in this central spot including the American Goldfinch, Tufted Titmouse, Chipping Sparrow, Northern Flicker, and of course, the state bird, the Chickadee.
After you’ve taken in the beautiful view of the falls and maybe dipped your toes, it’s time to descend back down the trail.
During the descent, it’s important to note that there are many slippery roots and moss that can be physically dangerous. It’s essential that you take your time, wear proper hiking shoes, and watch where you step to avoid an injury.
The trail is also accessible in the winter, but proper gear is required.
The view of the falls surrounded by freshly fallen snow is breathtaking, but safety is important so make sure to dress in warm clothes and utilize snowshoes and/or ice grippers. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see frozen water formations in the falls and stream.
