Maine might just have some of the best ghost stories in the country. Given just how old the state is, that’s not surprising. But what we do find surprising is the number of times we’ve told a story and had more than one person agree that they know it to be true. One of the creepiest tales we’ve been told involves a remote bridge and a strange car accident.
Most Mainers know Millinocket best as the home of famous Mount Katahdin. It's a beautiful, semi-remote area worth visiting if you'd like to see some of the most rugged scenery in the state.
A dense fog had settled in and a car intending to head over the bridge ended up in the water instead. Whether they careened off the bridge or went down an embankment still is not clear, but we do know that a couple went down with it.
When he returned, there was no sign of his wife and she was never seen again. At least, not as her mortal self. Referred to as "The White Lady of Millinocket," locals report sightings of her along the river, near the bridge.
Some say they've seen her handprints in the windows of their own cars. Others say they've seen her roaming the area. Maybe she was in search of her own help. Or maybe she's looking for her husband. Either way, her presence is still felt in the area of the Screaming Bridge and that has us looking for alternate ways around!
