The World's Largest Indoor Rotating Globe Is Right Here In Maine At The Former DeLorme Office

One of our favorite things about Maine is the many roadside attractions that exist in just about every corner. While often overshadowed by natural beauty such as Acadia, these quirky little stops are totally worth seeking out. This one, tucked away on Route 1 in Yarmouth, might be one of the wackiest!

Eartha, built in 1998 and housed in a three-story glass building on the former DeLorme campus, was designed by CEO David DeLorme.

And she's absolutely gigantic! Built to be 41 feet in diameter, it's a full-scale model. One inch is approximately 16 miles, which means that California is about three and a half feet tall.

Eartha rotates exactly as the real earth does. Using two different motors, it takes about 18 minutes for Eartha to go around completely.

And the globe weighs a whopping 5,600 pounds.

You might recognize the name DeLorme from the name of the folks who brought us the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer. They were bought by Garmin in 2016 and the sign outside will tell you exactly where to find Eartha.

That's, of course, if you somehow miss seeing her from the road! But that's highly unlikely given how striking this sight is.

And the nighttime views from outside are just as incredible!

Eartha is located on the northbound side of US-1. It can be seen from the street, or by pulling into the parking lot.
