The Bug Light Kite Festival In Maine Is The Most Charming Way To Celebrate Spring
Spring has sprung and there’s no better way to celebrate than heading outside and soaking up some fresh air. If you feel like adding a dose of whimsy to your weekend and love spending time by the sea, then checking out this spring kite festival is just the thing. Here are the details.

If you’re into kites, you probably already know about Bug Light Park. It’s a gorgeous seaside spot in South Portland that offers some of the best kite-flying in New England. And for one glorious weekend in May, this spot comes alive with kites, enthusiasts, and curious onlookers as the city’s largest kite festival commences.

The Bug Light Kite Festival is an annual celebration of spring that involves launching absolutely massive kites into the air above the shore. You can bring your own kite or buy one at the South Portland Historical Society’s museum gift shop. Or, if you’re just looking to kick back and admire the view, feel free to bring a picnic blanket and some snacks to set up on the grass.

If you’re interested in spreading your wings, however, there will be kite-flying masters on hand to give you tips and tricks. Serious fliers can attend workshops and lessons, and there will be plenty of food and beverages around to keep you going all afternoon. Don’t miss the barbecue on the harbor.

The festival will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2019 and ends the same day at 4 p.m. Once you’re done admiring the kites, feel free to head on into Bug Light for a public viewing. You shouldn’t attempt to park in Bug Light Park during the festival, as spaces are extremely limited. Instead, you should park in the SMCC parking lot at the end of Broadway and walk in, or park on Madison Street before you enter the park.
