As the weather warms up, it’s time to think about how to enjoy the great outdoors of Maine. While many people will head to places like Acadia National Park or The Kennebunks, we love hopping on a local ferry to one of of the many offshore islands that dot the state’s craggy coastline. There are many popular ones from which to choose, but we recommend you head straight for this less-visited island sitting just a short ride from Portland.
Head slightly north from Peaks Island and you'll find another beautiful Casco Bay island: Great Diamond Island.
There are a number of walks that will take visitors through the mossy woods as well as secluded beaches where you're likely to have the place to yourself.
You'll probably get hungry, so be sure to pack a lunch and some snacks as there's only a small general store or the restaurant located at the Inn at Diamond Cove.
Whether you stay overnight, or choose to take the short ferry ride back to Portland Great Diamond Island is the perfect alternative to Peaks during the more crowded summer months.
