Nestled along the shores of this lesser-known lake is an inn that will absolutely warm your heart. Not only is it beautiful on the inside, but it’s also got some of the best water views you can find in one of the most overlooked parts of the state. This summer, skip the tourist-packed coastal towns and head inland for a stay at this lake hotel in Maine.
The Bear Mountain Inn can be found in Waterford, Maine sitting along at the head of Bear Pond in the foothills of the White Mountains.
While it's been around since the 1950s with several different owners, the current innkeepers, Brian and Julie Sullivan, have remodeled and their grand re-opening takes place on May 3rd, 2018!
And, the way it got its name makes it even more special. The story goes that in the early spring of in the 1700s, a mother bear and her cub were crossing the frozen lake. The mother fell through the ice, leaving her young cub behind. That summer, the bear's body was found in the lake and removed. The name was given to honor the spirit of the mother bear.
Hike up Bear Mountain in the morning, then cool off with a jump into the lake by afternoon.
