For young children, there’s nothing like a day at the park. Running, playing, sliding, etc. — the park is a delightful day trip destination. However, for individuals who may have physical and developmental challenges, it may be impossible to run and play on a traditional park’s playground. That’s why the fully inclusive playground built in Stockholm, Maine is something residents are very excited about.
Stockholm, Maine is a tiny town in Aroostook County with approximately 300 residents. It’s a town that is full of charm, friendly faces, and one of the few inclusive playgrounds in the Pine Tree State.
Due to a decline in population over the years, Stockholm has become extremely limited where children can run and play — but not any more. Due to several new, young families moving into town, a committee was formed to build a playground that everyone — including those with limitations — could enjoy.
The committee raised thousands of dollars to design and build the playground for the community. The money was raised through various fundraisers, donations, and grants. And during June of 2023, the community came together to help assemble and build the playground.
The playground is unique in several ways. For starters, it is one of only three inclusive playgrounds in Maine but it is the first to belong and be formed by a Maine town.
It includes two wheelchair ramps and ramps close to the ground for those with physical limitations. However, there are also steps, monkey bars, and higher slides for individuals as well.
You will find this new inclusive playground in Stockholm behind the town office. It is just one of the many charming features that help this small town in Maine stand out.
