Taking a road trip to see gorgeous natural wonders is a popular Maine pastime. With our majestic mountain views and stunning coasts, just about everywhere you go you can see iconic views in Maine. This 4.5-hour road trip will take you from the Bar Harbor coast to the Height of Land, with breathtaking views all the way. Let’s explore some of the most stunning views you’ll ever see on this epic road trip through Maine.
We start our journey just a little way south of the charming town of Bar Harbor at Thunder Hole. You may wish to bring a change of clothes and experience this place in all its glory. Hold tight onto the handrails and when the waves rush in with a thunderous roar - you'll hear a massive boom and get a mighty splash. It’s quite a rush and a great way to wake up and start this journey.
Now we’ll head inland on Mt. Desert Island to one of the most picturesque bodies of water in the state, Jordan Pond. No matter what time of year you come here, it is breathtaking. The lush green of spring and summer leads to a swath of fall colors and then an icy winter wonderland. There’s no bad time of year to come here.
Just a short jaunt up the road you’ll arrive at the trailhead to Bubble Rock, a massive boulder that was placed here by glaciers long ago. It looks rather precarious as if it might fall at any time, yet it is quite firmly rooted in place and the surrounding scenery is fantastic.
Sometimes you don’t have to stray far from a town to see some of the most beautiful scenery. Vaughan Woods is nestled in the idyllic town of Hallowell and a stroll through these woods is sure to calm your mind while invigorating your senses. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.
As we head west then north up into the forests, we’ll arrive at the tiny village of Byron, which has its own claim to fame: Coos Canyon. This place has some of the most otherworldly rock formations in the state and there are so many pockets and nooks that the water has worn away. It’s mesmerizing to watch and listen to the water flowing over them
The last stop on our journey is to one of the most awe-inspiring vistas in Maine, Height of Land. This is one of the most beloved overlooks in the state. You’ll see forests, lakes, wildflowers, and distant mountains and the land looks so untouched and pristine. It’ll make you fall in love with Maine all over again!
