Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
Hidden away near the beautiful little town of Millinocket, Maine, is a set of trails that make up one of the greatest adventures one can possibly have in this little state. Sure, Maine is small – but we more than make up for that with our natural beauty and plethora of wonders. Expert hikers will love a day or three spent traversing the Hunt, Helon Taylor, and Chimney Pond Loop trails. It’s difficult, yes, but I cannot stress enough just how worth it this incredible trail is. This iconic hiking trail in Maine is nearly 19 miles long, but I promise every step is worth it.
Baxter State Park - where you'll find this epic trail - is nothing short of mind-blowing.
From stunning mountain vistas to crystal-clear lakes, thick forests, and an overall beautiful feel, this is the ultimate destination for avid hikers.
As I mentioned, this hike is 18.7 miles in length and it's thought to take about 14 hours to do from start to finish; however, this doesn't factor in the need for camping and staying along the way.
The mountains are much too rugged to try to complete this entire hike in one day, so you'll need to make camp for at least one night there (and one night back, ideally).
You'll take the Hunt Trail all the way up to the summit of Mt. Katahdin, which is probably one of the best feelings in the world - summiting a mountain! Bring lots of water no matter what season it is; as you go up in elevation, you'll need to stay more hydrated.
If you're not sure of what to bring along for a rigorous hike like this one, no worries - check out our ultra-helpful hiking trip packing list for peace of mind. Now you won't have to worry about forgetting anything for a challenging journey like this one!
Of course, nobody says you have to do the whole thing, either. Hikers of all skill levels are welcome to come poke around... just be sure to know your limits!
