My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
Off the beaten path, located in small towns all across Maine are hidden gems. They may be scattered in the deep forest, or in little coastal towns. There is no doubt that our state is teeming with lesser-known secrets. We know of a little hidden trail in China, Maine, that is filled with unique points of interest for both adults and kids alike. This very well could be one of China’s best-kept secrets.
Hidden inconspicuously behind both the China primary and middle schools lies the China School’s Forest.
You can see a large wooden sign at the start of the forest, follow the path and you are now on the official trail. Keep an eye out for wooden silhouettes of indigenous forest critters hidden all along the trail.
Soon you will come up to a pond with a long boardwalk straight through the middle of it.
This is a great place to watch for frogs and tadpoles. The forest is designed with children in mind and there are plenty of places throughout the trail that is meant to inspire imagination and play. The boardwalk can easily become a pirate ship in the mind of creative children.

There are a couple of seating areas designated throughout the trail, but none are as cool as the Gathering Place. This area has its own birch tree archway and leads to a circular clearing with benches. It’s another great place for kids to play and pretend.
There is a sign challenging kids to look into the holes and hidden throughout the forest are wooden and painted cutouts of various birds. Kids are tasked with finding each one listed on the sign. These kinds of games add a lot of fun to the China School’s Forest.
The most exciting addition to this trail is sure to be the tree house.
This hulking structure is built around a tree and will light up any child who lays their eyes on it. With a spiral ramp, and a ladder you can climb to the top and play to your heart's content. Children and adults alike can get in on the fun with this unique find in the woods.
This trail is certainly kid-friendly and dog friendly as well. So bring your kids or your fur babies to enjoy this interesting trail hidden behind the two China schools.
