There are a lot of things we’ve come to expect in Maine. Lobster dinners, fried seafood, beautiful views and calming sea-breezes are all a part of being here in Vacationland. But those who live here year-round also expect a very special event to take place each fall. And this weekend it’s finally here!
The Common Ground Country Fair takes place the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday after Labor Day in Unity. It's been running and growing since 1977 and this year's event is expected to be just as big as last years which brought in more than 60,000 people!
But, even if you know nothing about farming the festivities will make you smile and help to teach you about the importance of Maine's farming community.
There are a variety of shows that take place over the jam-packed three days, including things like a 5K race, a sheep dog demonstration and even a vegetable harvest class.
The best part of the event might be the beautiful artwork that's created each year to celebrate it. Seen on posters and t-shirts, the design operates as a contest offering one winner $2,500 to best capturing the essence of the fair.
The weekend is a fun way to get involved in the community and it's your best shot at learning how to get closer to the land. Demonstrations including blacksmithing and stoneworking make this a truly well-rounded weekend.
It's run by volunteers and volunteering is a great way to get involved. And, if the food contests are your favorite part of the weekend keep in mind that volunteering offers you a chance to be entered into a lottery to be a food judge!
Whatever it is that appeals to you, you can bet you'll find it here at the Common Ground Fair. If you can't make it for the entire weekend, head over for the day to see what it's all about. We bet you'll visit for the entire weekend next year!
If you don't live nearby, you can camp. Look for the website link below for all the information you'll need to plan your visit.
The Common Ground Fair begins this Friday, September 20th and runs through Sunday, September 22nd. There are a variety of exhibitions and activities, which you can find here. Most tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the. door, but you can find more information on that on their website.
Address: 294 Crosby Brook Road, Unity, ME, 04988.
