There are times when all we want to do is socialize and be around our friends and family. Then there are the times when…we don’t. No matter how much we love other people, getting away and finding some peace and quiet is necessary. If you’re an artist, you might find that this opportunity is the perfect thing for some alone time to create!
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is one of Maine's most remote, but most beautiful regions. It can be found in both Aroostook and Piscataquis counties.
The waterway is actually made up of many different lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams in the Maine North Woods. And, of course, this includes the Allagash River.
And while this remote destination is beautiful, it doesn't get nearly the coverage it deserves. Owing, perhaps, to the fact that it's just so far away from many Mainers.
The Allagash Wildnerss Waterway's new Visiting Artist Program offers an opportunity for one artist to "immerse themselves in the Maine wilderness and the creative process, and ultimately, to share the experience with the public."
The winner will receive lodging in a rustic, one-room cabin on the Waterway for two weeks in August. They'll also have an orientation to the Waterway by AWW rangers and the chance to bring a guest with them if they prefer not to be completely alone.
In return, the artist is asked to host an evening program as well as an open-studio to share their skills and techniques to the those who are interested. Within a year, the artist will need to share their work with the Allagash Wilderness Waterway to share themselves.
This is a great program for artists looking for inspiration as well as a way to share their work.
Applications, which are due on April 30th, require a resume and summary of your work, along with some information related to what you plan on creating.
You can learn more about the opportunity and application elements here. And you can learn more about the Allagash Wilderness Waterway on the Maine tourism website.
