I love to find unique things that you can’t find anywhere else. Once I started I couldn’t stop, I have traveled all over seeking amazing things right in our own backyard. Like did you know there is a waterfall in Saco? Pretty interesting right? It feels special when we can make a claim about our state that no one else can make. Sure, there are donut places around the country, but how many of them use Maine potatoes as an ingredient? The Holy Donut in Southern Maine is bringing in lots of locals and people can’t get enough of these special donuts that are uniquely Maine. After partaking in these unique and flavorful creations I think it is now safe to say this is one of the best donut shops in Maine. 

It all started one day when the owner of The Holy Donut realized that the Portland area didn’t have a really good donut shop. Every city needs a really good place to get donuts, right?

Like most entrepreneurs, she saw a need and sought to fill it. She had some experience in the kitchen so she started experimenting and one thing that she discovered was something you typically don’t find in a donut: potatoes. That’s right, using Maine potatoes in donuts is an old state classic, and after twisting the recipe to her liking, she knew she had a hit. Things started off slow at first in a little coffee shop, but then the business grew quickly for this now-famous little donut.
Locations have opened all around the southern Maine area and more and more business just keeps rolling in. You can find these delectable delights in Portland, Scarbrough, Brunswick, and Arundel.

It is not an uncommon thing to see a line out the door of people waiting to get their fix of these heavenly donuts. Find your spot in line and know that every step is a step closer to these mouth-watering sugary treats. Trust me, it is well worth the wait.
Inside, you will be rewarded with the sweet smell of freshly baked donuts and brewed coffee.

This is one unique donut shop, however. You will have a plethora of flavors to choose from and you can even scope out some sweet Holy Donut merch. Take home a handcrafted mug or an iconic Holy Donut shirt to go perfectly with your box of Maine’s finest donuts. This is after all a Maine tradition so why not get something to remember the decadent flavors long after the last crumb has been gobbled up?

I think the owner exceeded expectations thoroughly in her goal to create the best donuts in Portland! I would even take it a step further and say these are some of the best donuts in Maine.
