Animals just have this amazing way of bringing out the best in so many of us. Unfortunately, many pets and farm animals never get to see the good side of humans, instead falling victim to cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. This farm animal sanctuary in Maine provides loving homes to rescued farm animals, giving them the opportunity to experience the good in humanity, and it invites visitors to meet its furry, fuzzy, and feathered residents.
Nestled on 20 lush acres in Durham, Graze in Peace offers sanctuary to abused, neglected, and unwanted farm animals. Each rescued farm animal finds a forever home at the sanctuary where they can…
Heal from the trauma of their past and live the rest of their lives free of fear. Graze in Peace, which got its start in Wisconsin in 2006, is home to a family of farm animals, including chickens, turkeys, goats, pigs, and llamas.
All residents have their own name and their own unique stories – Strawberry the pig and Coal the sheep, for example. Some were abandoned; others were neglected or abused, and some were saved from auction.
Graze in Peace welcomes visitors to tour the farm and to meet the residents annually from spring through fall. You can even volunteer from spring through fall on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
In addition to rescuing farm animals, the sanctuary also hosts a Care Farm Program for those individuals who, like their farm animal counterparts, need a safe, nurturing place to heal from their own traumas.
If you’ve got kids in or you are in middle or high school, you can also apply for one of the after school programs – the Humane Education Program or the Sustainable Living Program.
A visit to Graze in Peace will give you the opportunity to meet the farm animals and to learn more about the farm itself. While tours are only held from spring through fall, you can still pitch in the rest of the year.
One way to help is to sponsor an animal, providing monetary support to help with the ongoing care of the animal. Sponsors can opt for a monthly sponsorship or a one-time sponsorship, which could cover three months to a year.
