Back in the early 1900s, if you wanted to get from one place to another quickly, you hopped aboard a train. Today, historic trains invoke a sense of nostalgia for a much simpler time. Take this train ride in Maine and be transported right back to the past.
Step right back in time when you hop aboard a train on the Downeast Scenic Railroad.
Pick up your tickets at the Maine Community Foundation Building at 245 Main Street in Ellsworth. You'll board the train right behind the building.
The railroad is managed by the Downeast Rail Preservation Heritage Trust, which preserves the railroad's history and restores trains.
This is a Columbine 102-passenger car that was recently restored by the railroad. Here it is before...
...and here it is after an extensive renovation.

The train engines, passenger cars, and cabooses come from all over the country.
The railroad has three engines. Engine 54, in the above photo, was built in 1948.
This passenger car is the McNeil Point Coach 155, which was built in 1910 and used by the Maine Central Railroad.
The Union River passenger car was built in 1917, and the open air passenger car was converted from a car originally meant to carry logs.
Your train ride starts at the Ellsworth Depot and takes a 13-mile journey that lasts 90 minutes.
During your trip, you'll see some of Maine's most beautiful scenery. Travel through wooded forests and open marshland while listening to the clickety-clack of the train along the rail.
You'll travel over bridges, through railroad crossings, and might even see wildlife including beavers, osprey, bald eagles, and even an occasional bear!
You'll enjoy light refreshments during your trip, and you can even bring a picnic lunch with you.
Tickets are $15 for adults; $8 for children ages 3-12; children two and under ride free. For more information about the Downeast Scenic Railroad, or to book tickets for the upcoming 2018 season, visit the
