One of the best ways to get the real feel of Maine is by seeing just how varied the landscape is. From ocean to forest to fields of green, there are so many beautiful views to take in. Wondering how best to enjoy those views? Hop on this train that will take you along a restored section of the Calais Branch Line for some of the best sights in the state.
The Downeast Scenic Railroad runs on a portion of the Maine Shore Line Railroad, which was completed all the way back in 1883.
History buffs will love that these beautiful trips take place on lovingly restored trains that make it feel as though riders are traveling through the state decades in the past.
The journey begins at the Washington Junction rail yard on the boarding platform outside Ellsworth. From here riders continue for six miles to the next station where the engine is moved from the back to the front of the train for the six-mile return trip.
Watching and learning about the machinery is great for train-lovers. And those who are here for the views will have the opportunity to take in rivers and streams.
By the time the train arrives back in the station riders will feel like they've had a true taste of what Maine is all about!
The Downeast Scenic Railroad runs twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays from the end of May through mid-October. Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and active military, $9 for children aged 3 to 12 and free for those 2 and under. You can learn more about the excursion and book your tickets on their website. You can get up-to-date information by following them on Facebook. They can be reached at 866-449-7245.
