To combine both of those things, consider taking a road trip in search of Maine’s best donuts! This trail will take you throughout the state straight to our favorites. Donuts are great, but crullers are an even better version of this delicacy. Lil's Cafe is known for these sugary treats and they sell out just about every day. There might not be a better place to go for donuts in southern Maine. Except of course all the other places on this list. But despite there being so many options, Congdon's remains a favorite. Load up on donuts, but also save room for their huge breakfast menu. Then, take a dozen to go for the ride!

Next up is a place that's been in existence for more than 100 years! Owned by a third-generation of the family, the recipes here have been perfected over time and passed down through the family. Keep thing simple with their impressive plain donut with chocolate frosting or the maple bacon version. But check out their newest additions as well.

Maine's famous potato donuts usually attract a huge crowd. Head to this location for your best chance at a speedy visit, but if you love lining up with cruise ship folks you'll want to go to the Old Port location. Any flavor you get will be lovable, but everyone seems to love the
triple berry glaze, which also happens to be great to look at!

Family owned and operated this place is another classic, can't-miss Maine bakery. Get here early for first pick of flavors, but this is also a great 5th stop on the way forward. We also recommend a coffee fill up here! Address: 554 Shore Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107.
At this point in your journey you'll be in Freeport, which means you'll probably want to stop for some shopping. Give yourself the necessary fuel but swinging into this Maine institution. You can order from their selection or design your own. They also have a location in Brunswick.

What we love about donuts in Maine is the great variety across different shops. From potato donuts to cake-like donuts, you'll find it all. And the cake-like donuts here are truly fabulous!

This one is a bonus for folks who agree that the journey is even better than the destination. Located fairly far away from the others on this list, Sadie's is worth the trip for true Maine donut lovers. This bakery was opened in 1948 and has been providing the Houlton area with fresh-baked goods on a daily basis ever since! There are two things on offer here. Either get the plain donut or the daily special. You'll leave happy no matter what you choose. You can pick up a sandwich or muffin here as well making it a great, well-rounded way to end your trip on the donut trail!
