Maine has many claims to fame. For example, many people associate the Pine Tree State with its impressive annual lobster yield. Maine is also known for being home to more than 4,000 offshore islands, but it’s also famous for its gorgeous coasts! However, many people don’t understand just how much coastline this state actually has. Maine has more miles of coastline than California! Pretty cool, right?
People travel from all over the country to enjoy the view from Maine’s coast. It’s beautiful here, and it's where I find some of my favorite scenery.
However, did you know that Maine is home to 3,478 miles of coastline? This means our state has more coastline than California (3,427 miles), Texas (3,359 miles), and Michigan (3,224 miles).
Only three states offer more coastline than Maine — Alaska (33,904 miles), Florida (8,436 miles), and Louisiana (7,721 miles).

So how does our great state offer more coastline than so many larger states? It is because of the hundreds of inlets and islands. You will only find 228 general coastlines in Maine.
With so much to explore, we suggest you start at Bar Harbor. This small town is considered one of the best coastal towns in the country and is the gateway to Acadia National Park. Here, you will find a charm that makes it hard to leave.
I also recommend a visit to Winter Harbor, a tiny town located on the Schoodic Peninsula. You’ll find two lighthouses along the harbor and views that are sure to inspire.
If you want to go for a short walk along the coast, consider the Fort Williams Park Loop. This easy trail is only one mile long, fairly flat, and provides breathtaking views.
Fort Williams Park is a charming area in Cape Elizabeth with several historical sites that are perfect for a day trip.
If you are like me, there is nothing quite like spending the day along Maine’s coast, and with so many miles to explore, there is plenty to see and do!
