Maine can certainly be a scary place with a haunted history. The nagging question remains about most of the ghost stories in our state — are they real? It depends on who you ask but one thing is for sure, our state is filled with these creepy stories. There is a small town that has had people visiting for years to see for themselves the reminisce of a black magic curse. The curse of the witch’s foot in Bucksport, Maine is a fascinating and dark tale that allures people to lean in closer to witness it with their own eyes. This is the legend of the witch’s foot in Bucksport.
There is a monument that has a stain that looks exactly like a woman’s leg, and the story is just as wild.
To see it yourself, you will have to travel to the little coastal town of Bucksport, Maine. On Route 1, you will see a little graveyard as you pass by. This is where you will find the monument for Johnathan Buck and on it, the terrible curse.
The small cemetery, at first glance, looks just like any other small New England graveyard. Some headstones date back as far as the 1700s. There is one burial place, however, that everyone flocks to.
The memorial of Jonathan Buck, the founder of Bucksport, has a strange image on it that was never intended when originally built. The clear shadow of a women’s leg can be seen facing the road. How did it get there?
As the flames rose higher and she was being consumed, these were her final words to the Colonel who called for the sentence: "So long shall my curse be upon thee and my sign upon your tombstone!"
As the fire grew her leg fell off and her deformed son who was rejected by society grabbed her leg and further insulted Johnathan before retreating into the darkness of the forest.
Sixty years later, the monument was erected and some years after that, the shadow of a woman's leg appears on the granite. Over the years, attempts have been made to remove it and yet nothing will stop the image from returning. Is this the remains of some black magic uttered from a woman's dying breath?
Well, as much as we would love to believe these claims there are a few things that simply do not line up. For one, the infamous Salam Witch Trials were over long before Johnathan was born, and burning women for magic seemed to be a thing of the past at that time in history. There is also no written account of anyone being executed for witchcraft in Maine. Perhaps the most compelling piece of evidence resides in the stone itself. Granite tends to oxidize and create imperfections in the stone and can easily create patterns. If you look closely at the top of the monument you will also see the shape of a heart, and we have a hard time believing this woman would have any love for Buck after being sentenced to death.
Even though the curse of the witch’s foot in Bucksport, Maine may just be a story, it still makes you wonder. It is an odd shape after all and what if this trial was never recorded to sweep these misdeeds under the rug of human history?
