My name is Chris Dodge and I live right here in the great state of Tennessee. My family and I are full adventurers filled with passion to see the amazing things our state has to offer. We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
I haven’t been everywhere but I have traveled around quite a bit and never have I found a better Chinese place than Lucky Garden. I know it is a bold statement but it is true you can taste the difference and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Sometimes the best places are unassuming hidden local secrets. The small-town restaurants that have the friendliest service, the hardest working employees, and fantastic tastes are all factors we love to see. Lucky Garden in Hallowell, Maine, has all of those things and far more. Locals will give high praise for this beloved Chinese place and people from far and wide have come to taste the mouth-watering flavor hidden within. When you go to Lucky Garden you can order from the menu but everyone knows there is really only one option when you dine in. The buffet in Maine offers a wide variety of dishes which we are thankful for because they are all so good there is no way to just choose one.
When you first see the outside you may be tempted to think that it is just another brick building in the heart of historic downtown Hallowell.
Walking the boardwalk leading to the front door you will start to get a feel for the beauty that is awaiting you inside. The flower boxes will be filled with brightly colored flowers and the smell of freshly cooked Chinese food will draw you ever closer.
I have been to the restaurant many, many times and I remember walking down this very walkway ever since I was a little kid. As I think back I can still smell the fresh flowers and hear the roar of the Kennebec River flowing down below.

When you arrive the staff is always happy to meet you.
If it is your first time they make a point to bring you into their restaurant with welcoming warmth. If you are there for a returning visit they will usually greet you by name and make you feel right at home. Great service can be hard to find but you will find it in abundance at Lucky Garden. Every time we have gone they will remember your name and welcome you making this small-town restaurant stand out even more. The staff actually taught me at an early age what good service looks like and to this day I don't know if I have experienced better servers anywhere else in the state.
The glorious buffet will sit in the middle of the room with warming lights on but I like to think of them as heavenly lights shining in on the tastiest of all feasts.
There are a few items that will be changed out from time to time but most of the items are set and are crowd favorites. However, with so many great choices you will not be lacking a single thing.
You can pile your plate high with chicken wings, crab rangoon, and perfectly prepared pork fried rice. Take a fluffy biscuit or some fried wanton chips to compliment any mountain of food. Every single item in the buffet is worth its own meal but you can sample it all.
This is just a small sampling of what you can expect from the Lucky Garden buffet menu. The offering is fairly small compared to some of the big Chinese buffets I have been to before but quantity doesn't always equal quality. Here you will find massive flavor in every tray and there isn't a bad choice anywhere at this buffet.
Some of the favorites are the teriyaki chicken and the Sesame chicken.
Both of them are fully stocked and just when you think the supply is getting low the kitchen crew will happily walk out with a plate full of steaming hot and freshly cooked chicken. You may want to go back up for seconds, or thirds because the delicious options are in such abundance. Finish off your meal with a smooth cup of steaming hot Oolong tea found freshly poured on every table.
Those who have tasted it know that Lucky Garden in Hallowell, Maine, is simply the best Chinese food around (Also the best buffet in Maine). A friendly welcoming staff, an all-you-can-eat buffet with all your favorites, and the best flavors in the state are just some of the reasons this restaurant has a loyal following. I cannot recommend this place enough and encourage you to visit it and try it for yourself. You can taste the difference. Please see the Lucky Garden website for more information.
If having so much food at the buffet makes you go into a warm and happy food coma then book a stay for a while in this downtown apartment and then take a nap before exploring the town more.
Speaking of exploring Hallowell more, make sure you visit the ever-popular trail affectionately nick-named “Hobbit Land“.
