With so many fun trails, beaches, and mountains Maine is a great place to explore with kids. The only problem with so many outdoor options is that we need to depend on the weather. As well all know, weather-dependent activities in Maine are risky business throughout the year! That’s why we love anything that allows us to have and can be done no matter the weather. A visit to the new location of this fun museum is a sure thing!
The new Children's Museum & Theater of Maine is the newest addition to Portland's family-friendly attractions and its new location at Thompson's Point is unbeatable.
Some might recall the former location in Portland's Old Port neighborhood. While the building was charming, there wasn't a ton of room and the museum was almost hidden on a small street.
Things today are much different! The new building is almost entirely windows offering tons of light from just about every exhibit. The lobby offers an art installation called “Climb" that also offers a fun climbing activity.
Every children's museum is fun, but this one places an emphasis on all things local, which includes exhibits that teach visitors about local ecology and nature.
In fact, the museum prides itself on just how few instructional signs there are. The idea is to let children explore and learn their own way to experience the exhibits.
The interactive nature that lets kids explore their own creativity also allows them to get a little messy on occasion. This is especially true at the "Go With the Flow" exhibit featuring two water works tables.
In addition to so many new and fun exhibits in this new location, we also love Maddy's Theater which has been around in some capacity for over 100 years. Its new location at Thompson's Point is just one more piece of it's history.
This place is so beautiful and so interesting that you'll be asking the kids in your life if you can tag along with them!
