There’s a lot to experience in Maine. Whether you enjoy exploring the great ideas or prefer things like great food, shopping or cultural events, it’s easy to pack every weekend with something fun to do. Anything you plan is sure to be fun, but lately we’re loving all the ways to explore the landscape. And our favorite is kayaking! This area in southern Maine offers some of the best kayak views, which is why it’s a must-visit when the weather is nice.
The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center in Scarborough offers one of the most beautiful ways to learn more about the landscape and ecology of Maine.
The area is believed to have been used first by the Sokokis Indians. European settlers arrived in the 1600s and used the marsh area to harvest salt hay to feed their cattle.
Over the years the marsh has been used for many purposes, but in 1957 the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife began the process of acquiring the marsh and in 1972 the nature center came to be.
The wildlife here is everywhere and it's fun to keep watch for an unexpected friend. The marsh provides an important habitat for birds and it's not uncommon to see visitors with cameras and long lenses trying to capture an image.
Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can learn more about visiting and plan for their fun events by visiting their website. You can also follow them on Facebook. They can be reached at 207-883-5100.
