In the summer, the population rises due to summer residents and tourists. The town of Newcastle, Maine is often called Damariscotta's twin village because it's also a wonderful destination and they're linked by the Main Street Bridge over the Damariscotta River.

Damariscotta also offers a quaint coastal downtown that attracts many shoppers and diners.

Some of the most popular restaurants and shops in Damariscotta include Harbor Yarns, The Kingfisher and The Queen, Gifts at 136, Schooner Landing, and River House.
Although downtown Damariscotta can get quite busy, especially in the summer months, there is a lot of peace to be found in this town too.

During the early mornings, a beautiful sunrise can be seen over both the Damariscotta River and Damariscotta Lake. Trails varying in difficulty along both of these bodies of water can be used for a meditative walk in the picturesque and calm natural scenery.
Other beautiful views can be seen on these trails including views of fields and wildflowers.

If you're lucky, you may even see animals that inhabit the area, such as the American bald eagle, harbor seals, horseshoe crabs, and double-crested cormorants.
