Is there a more perfect food than the sandwich? We think not. After all, it’s portable, customizable, and stuffed with delicious ingredients. Maine has no shortage of great sandwiches, but there’s one little shop in Kennebunk that you definitely need to visit.
If you live in Kennebunk, you wait all winter long to see this sign. Charlie Bennett founded his sandwich shop in 1982, and this little shop has been serving up award-winning sandwiches in Maine every spring and summer since.
Charlie was quite a legend. A star athlete, he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. After serving in World War II, he came home and served his community even more as a teacher for 37 years, and also played a vital role in the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association.
The slogan here is "Sandwiches as big as the legend." The sandwiches here are a fitting tribute to the man who gave so much to the community of Kennebunk.
From the moment you walk in the door, you'll likely smell the steak and peppers grilling, along with whatever else is on order. This shop uses only the freshest ingredients, and the quality is evident.
The Steak Combo is one of the most popular menu items. Loaded with fresh steak, peppers, and onions, it's a little bit of heaven on a bun (a soft, fresh bun, that is).
Start your day off right with a breakfast sandwich. Get a steak, egg, and cheese sandwich on a deli roll, or choose bacon or ham, egg and cheese on an English muffin, wrap or deli roll.
While the original Bennett’s in Kennebunk is full of history, the shop has expanded with two other stores in Portsmouth, NH, and Boston, MA. Check those out, too!
If you’re a real foodie, you probably already know about the upcoming cheese festival in Maine – if not, read our article and make plans to attend!
