When it comes to pizza, you don’t want to leave anything to chance! There are tons of places to grab a pie or a slice here in Maine, but if you want something great you’re going to have to make sure you’re making good choices. You can read reviews, of course. Or, you can head straight for our favorite spot in Portland. The pizza here is delicious and it’s so big, you might not need to eat again for days!
Slab Sicilian Street Food in Portland is almost hidden away in the Portland Public Market building.
Slab is probably best known for the authentic Sicilian street food they've perfected. And it's the Sicilian crust pizza that's garnered the most attention.
The crust is made in the old world style using dough that's been mixed fresh by hand. The result is the doughiest, most delicious pizza we've ever had.
And the best part is the size! Pizzas are served in three sizes. The full slab is a whopping eight pounds, the half slab is four pounds and the hand slab is one pound.
That's right! Order yourself a slice and you're looking at holding one pound of food in your hands. If you can finish this in one sitting, we tip our hats to you. Or at least our red pepper flakes.
Not sure all that pizza is what you need? No problem! You can always order from the sandwich menu to gobble up this muffuletta. It comes with rosa salame, prosciutto cotto, biellese pepperoni, provolone, olive and pickled pepper salad and a garlic-oregano spread, all on a sesame roll.
Or if you want a taste of the Italian, order the meatball sandwich. It's filled with meatballs made with beer-braised beef, pork sausage, and banana peppers and topped with mozzarella, provolone, tomato gravy on toasted luna bread.
If you like your pizza with a side of something cool and refreshing, be sure to take a look at their beer list. It's huge, unique and much of it is local.
In a world where pizza joints can be considered a dime-a-dozen, this is one we dream about!
