Hiking in Maine is one of the state’s most popular pastimes. There are so many unique trails to explore and some of the best views in New England can be seen from our mountains. But, while we love to get outside, sometimes we just want the payoff. When that’s the case, head to these mountains which have roads right to the top!

You might be surprised that a mountain with sweeping views like this is located in southern Maine. The area, officially referred to as "The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region" actually spans almost 30,000 acres across York, Eliot, Ogunquit and South Berwick. We love that this drive is totally free and open year-round. And, for those who find themselves with last-minute ambition, you can also choose to hike to the top once you arrive.

This beauty is a Maine classic. While there are plenty of hikes through Acadia, we think this simple drive up the tallest mountain in the state is one of the best ways to experience the area. The road normally opens in mid-April, but check the website for schedule changes. Entry is about $25 and at the top, you can get out and access a .3-mile hiking trail just in case you decide you'd like to stretch those legs after all. Note that there are new rules set to be in place later this year. Click here to learn more about them.

While not a mountain (at all) this view is one worth mentioning. The rocky coast just screams "Maine" and it's easy to access. Just head to the parking lot, get out and start exploring. You can see the lighthouses, but we sometimes just come here to take in the water. And you really don't even have to get out of your car!

We couldn't do an entire article with mountain roads and not include our neighbors at the border. The Mount Washington Auto Road might be one of the most scenic mountain drives around. Sign in at the base of the mountain and received a bumper sticker, audio guide and the freedom to enjoy all the views you can on your way to the top. Once there you can explore and get a feel for just how big this thing really is!
We’ve been taking quite a few safe road trips these days. If you’re doing the same we have something you’ll want to try! Here are 9 stops along Maine’s US-1 that are drive-worthy destinations.
