Every state has something special to those who live there. From BBQ in North Carolina to Key Lime Pie in Florida, there are some things you just won’t find in other places. Maine is no different. In fact, I have recently decided that the things unique to Maine are actually significantly better than those unique to every other state. Key Lime Pie? I’ve made it and come pretty darn close to the real thing. But, try to find a proper lobster roll outside of Maine? Nope, not possible. So, let’s dive in to the things Maine is known for – some things you might be able to locate elsewhere but that just won’t be the same as what you’ll get in Maine.

1. The first sunrise in America.

Be at the summit of Cadillac Mountain between mid-October and early March and you'll be greeted by America's first light.
2. More than 60 glorious lighthouses.

With Maine's craggy coast, it's no wonder we need so many ways to guide us safely to harbor. Portland Head Light is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in America! Lighthouses in Maine just can't be beat.
3. The 100-mile wilderness.

Said to be the hardest portion of the entire Appalachian Trail, Maine is home to the 100-mile wilderness. These last arduous miles bring hikers to Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the AT. Speaking of which...
4. Maine is home to the spot where through-hikers complete their AT journey.

The Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail is located at the top of Katahdin. The last push of the trail is a seven hour journey. But the end feels oh-so-good. And that's not the only natural wonder Maine is known for. Acadia National Park is another point of state pride, for good reason -- just take a look:
5. Cheap car insurance.

At around $876 per year, Maine has less than average expense for car insurance premium in the country, according to bankrate.com. If you absolutely hate saving money, move to Michigan where you can pay the highest premium at about $4,003. For perspective, the national average is around $1,265.
6. The first incorporated city in the United States.

9. The only Jersey Shore that is NOT located in New Jersey.
