When it comes to food, most people assume we only do one thing here in Maine: Lobster. While it’s true that we serve up a mean lobster, there are plenty of other foods to rave about here in Vacationland. In fact, many of our restaurants have achieved national (and even global!) acclaim. Unsurprisingly, these places are often busy and can be hard to get into when they’re packed with visitors clamoring to get a taste of what Maine food is all about. While we typically avoid the places we think might be a little too busy and over-hyped, there are some that are absolutely worth the trouble! Today, we’ve listed a few famous restaurants that we think are popular for a reason!
This little restaurant is tucked away and can be found at night by following the twinkle of the outdoor patio lights. Enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine and any of the constantly changing, fresh dishes. This spot was recently reported to have sold out of all their reservations for the upcoming season in 15 minutes! This remote spot is one of Maine's most wonderful hidden (but very famous!) gems. Central Provisions has been humming in the Old Port since 2014. The historic building that is home to the restaurant provides the perfect, cozy feel to this small plates and cocktail-focused establishment. If you can't get a table, try showing up for a bar seat. This just might be the most hip restaurant in Portland, if not Maine. Lately, "famous" feels like an understatement. Mentioned in travel magazines far and wide and often named to "best of" lists, we recommend a visit to Eventide during the off season when you have a better chance of getting a table. The hip concrete bar features a shellfish display made of a slab of Maine granite. The oysters are categorized into "Maine" and "From Away" and change continually. While the hype always has us nervous for the output, Red's won't disappoint. There's oftentimes a long wait for a good reason. While this one might not be a new and trendy, it's a Portland institution! It's been around since 1982, when it was created on a 200 foot former car ferry. Located within luxury boutique hotel, Hidden Pond, Earth is a delightful place to spend a meal. Their slow food and farm-to-table feel will delight foodies. Originally opened back when Biddeford was a textile mill town, the Palace Diner has been around since 1927. Known for their simple menu items that come perfectly prepared, you won't find typical diner fare at The Palace. While the names may sound familiar, each ingredient is made fresh and local (whenever it makes sense) and the taste is nothing short of perfection.
