Historians will tell you that the Maine Italian is named after the nationality of the inventor, not the actual country. Legend has it, back in 1902, in a little shop in Portland, Giovanni Amato created the sandwich by cutting one of his loaves lengthwise and piling it with ham, turkey, herbs and other deliciousness. Today's Maine Italians are still piled high with ham, peppers, American cheese, sliced pickles, tomatoes, onion, and olives. For an out of state dose, call Amato's. They have an assemble at home version! Check out Derosier's for a great Italian in Freeport!
