When it comes to vacations, few places are better than Maine. They don’t call it Vacationland for nothing. Whether you live here or are from away and just need a little rest and relaxation, Maine offers lots of benefits. We’ve got great beaches, beautiful forests and plenty of food and beverage. So, if you’re looking for an easy overnight trip you might think about checking out some of these Maine towns. Some are obvious, but others might just surprise you.
This is where you'll find the iconic Bailey Island Cribstone Bridge. One of our favorite things to do is dig into some lobster while watching the sunset in the distance. Or, take a walk to Giant's Stairs at the far end of Bailey Island. We love Airbnb for stays in small towns like this one, so check it out and find something special.
It's no surprise that this little town is one of the best for overnight visits. Just take a look at the streets on any given summer day. But, before you write it off as too touristy, consider staying in one of the many locally run bed and breakfasts. These places bring a real Maine flair to any trip to Kennebunkport and they'll make you feel right at home. Consider The Captain Lord Mansion, the 1802 House Bed and Breakfast or Captain Fairfield Inn.
Another obvious choice that gets discounted among some. Yes, it will be more expensive than some of the smaller town on this list, but you can't beat fun and attractions. Consider the Portland Regency Hotel & Spa or The Francis for two very different stays.
Affectionately known as "Moonbat Kingdom" to some, this little town is big on art and culture. You'll find lots of galleries as well as small restaurants and bakeries here. Check out The Jeweled Turret Inn.
Lots of sandy beaches, a famous lighthouse and lots of restaurants and ice cream make this a great overnight spot. Especially if you can manage a few overnights. Try the Union Bluff Hotel, the York Harbor Inn or any number of the local bed and breakfasts.
This little seashore spot is one of the best places to combine a beach vacation with arts. You can spend the day at the beach and then plan a day at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art to see works by Winslow Homer. Consider the Footbridge Beach Motel, Anchorage by the Sea or any of the small local bed and breakfasts.
Not one of the more touristy towns on this list, Bethel is best for those who love to be close to the outdoors. There are lots of place to enjoy nature - from the lakes to the mountains to the many forests. And in the winter you can visit Sunday River or Mount Abram. Stay at the Grand Victorian Inn or consider camping.
Take a hike through Camden Hills State Park and then hit the hay! There are so many bed and breakfasts here that we hesitate to even give you options for fear that you won't explore on your own. But you might want to check out Whitehall or the Grand Harbor Inn. And don't forget those bed and breakfasts!
Hop on the ferry from Portland and you'll be at this Casco Bay island in about ten minutes. It's small enough to walk around completely. Or, you can rent a golf cart and make an adventure out of it. While it's easy enough to go back and forth from Portland, we love the idea of an Airbnb here! You can also give The Inn On Peaks Island a try.
If you love art, this is the place for you. There are tons of museums and galleries to explore. Plus, if you like getting out on the water you can hop aboard and chartered sailboat. Come for the day, but if you want to stay overnight check out the Granite Inn or the famous Samoset Resort.
