The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775. Fun fact: The other states that recognize the civic holiday are Massachusetts and Wisconsin, where it is called "Patriots' Day."

Our voter turnout is truly impressive. During the 2012 election, 61% of voting aged Mainers showed up at the polls. That's a whopping 10% higher than the national average. That placed us second in the nation in terms of voter turnout. In 1991 and 1996, we were ranked #1.
