Here are some of our favorite activities in Maine that come at no expense. So, head out the door, open your mind and enjoy the awesome things you can do in Maine without opening your wallet!
Not only do our libraries offer free access to books, magazines, movies and music, many have free programs that run throughout the day, all year long. Many people are surprised by the support that their local library provides to the community. Your librarian can also help you track down information that doesn't relate to books. Librarians all have masters degrees in library science, which makes them experts at research as a whole. The next time you have a question, ask your librarian to help you track down the answer! Wild Blueberry Land is part strange blueberry-shaped structure, part market but simply paying it a visit is an activity in and of itself!

There are lots of options for free, outdoor movie watching throughout the state. If you're in Southern Maine, Bug Light Park and Congress Square are great options. We love Higgins Beach in Scarborough! Located just around the bend from the Spurwink River, it's the perfect beach if you like to work for your relaxing day. Simply put in a few miles down and paddle your way to the beach. Surfers will enjoy the waves at Higgins and those who like to relax with a good book will enjoy the half a mile of beautiful white sand. Higgins Beach is also known for its striped bass fishing and an historic shipwreck embedded in the sand. To get there, turn off Route 77, head down Ocean Higgins at the end of Bayview Avenue.

Mainers are talented! Check out the art walks happening in a variety of Maine towns. Many include open galleries, free live performances and crafts sold along the sidewalk. Portland's takes place the first Friday of every month, all year round! There are also free art walks in Brunswick, Bangor, Bath and Rockland. Click here for more information.
This network of trails is located near the elementary school in town and serves as a great place for providing outdoor education to the community. If you're looking to take it easy, take the Washburn Trail. For those looking to get deeper into the woods, there are a few different trails that cross each other. If you explore all the trails, you'll still have a fairly easy time. Additionally, there are markers throughout providing information on flora and fauna.

Looking for a little bit of culture on the cheap? Many of our universities have beautiful art collections. Moast are open to the public and completely free. We like The Bowdoin College Museum of Art, pictured here.
Mackworth Island, located in Casco Bay, is one of the only islands reachable by car (what!?) with absolutely no cost to do so. You'll find the entry in Falmouth, and as long as you can get parking, you can spend a few hours enjoying the path that circles the entire island. You'll also find the wonderful-for-kids fairy village where visitors build tiny homes out twigs, seashells and leaves.

It's just about the most beautiful option available in Maine (except maybe a sunset) and it's absolutely free. Just set your alarm, wake up early and keep your eyes open.
