The southwest corner of Louisiana is a treasure trove of hidden gems that are just waiting to be explored. One of the best ways to explore this region of the Pelican State is by taking a scenic drive down the Creole Nature Trail. One of the points of interest along this 180-mile drive is the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, and it’s the perfect place for the entire family to spend an afternoon exploring. Let’s check it out:
Welcome to the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, the largest coastal marsh refuge on the Gulf Coast.
The refuge is home to more than 200 species of birds, a very large population of alligators, minks, muskrats, river otters, rabbits, turtles, snakes, and many others.

The Wetland Walkway is one of the best ways to explore the refuge.
The trail is less than two miles and kid-friendly, but since you’ll be walking through the marsh, there’s not much shade so be sure you’re wearing sunscreen and maybe a hat.
If you're patient, you may even watch a bird swoop down for a tasty snack! This whole area is a great place to introduce kids to the joys of Louisiana's natural beauty. They'll have a blast trying to spot gators in the water.
It's also a great spot to do a little fishing and crabbing.
It's easily one of my favorite scenic areas in Louisiana. Once you visit, you'll find yourself returning again and again to watch the area change throughout the seasons.
