Located within the Kisatchie National Forest, the Wild Azalea Trail in Louisiana is the longest primitive trail in the state and features some of the most unique terrains in the state. With over 604,000 acres to explore spanning over seven parishes and across five ranger districts, it’s one of the most underrated areas in Louisiana. There are countless primitive trails that take you through this enchanting forest, but there’s one in particular that stands out from the rest.

The point-to-point trail will take you through some truly amazing scenery not often seen in this beautiful state.

Located in the Evangeline Unit of the Calcasieu Ranger District just outside of Alexandria, the endpoints of this trail are the Valentine Recreation Area and the Woodworth Town Hall.

You don’t have to do the entire trek, you can always park at one of the trailheads and hike for as long as you’d like before turning around.

Camping is permitting along the way, just make sure you’re at least 30 feet away from the trail. As always, make sure to pick up any trash and leave only footprints!

To be fair, the trail is beautiful year-round, but depending on when things bloom, you might just have an added pop of color to your hike if you time it right.

Look up and you might see a majestic bald eagle surveying the area! Keep your eyes peeled for deer, fox, turkey, and so many other animals that call the area home.
