Louisiana has definitely had its fair share of oddities—no doubt about it. But these things are some of the strangest to ever happen in this state—they truly take the cake! Let us know what you think is the strangest.
1. The assassination of Huey P Long
Soon after Huey Long was shot, questions were immediately raised and the mystery surrounding his murder still lives on today. While even I saw the ‘bullet’ holes inside the State Capitol building, there’s still a lot of people out there who don’t know if even those are real or not!
2. LIGO accelerator
Did you know that there is a major research center in Louisiana trying to pick up signals of gravitational waves? It’s happening folks….
3. Louisiana Mudfest
Louisiana Mudfest is a once a year convergence of mayhem. The recipe of mud, monster trucks, and plenty of beer makes this event completely unique year after year.
4. The funeral of Mickey Easterling
A New Orleans socialite, even in death, Ms. Easterling made it a point to go out with a bang—by having her body fully dressed and propped up, surrounded by flowers and feathers, at her wake. Since then, she’s practically started a trend in New Orleans funerals—but there was something particularly striking about her style!
5. The death of Bonnie and Clyde
The legendary gangsters saw their end in Louisiana in 1934, when Texas and Louisiana state police officers ended their long pursuit in a shoot out that left the 1934 Ford Deluxe Bonnie and Clyde were driving riddled with bullet holes.
6. International border
Did you realize there is an international border marker on the edge between Texas and Louisiana? During the brief time when Texas was its own country, this marker was erected and is still standing today.
7. Jayne Mansfield Crash
This major Hollywood starlet met her death on U.S. Highway 90 supposedly because a mosquito fog machine blocked her driver’s view of the car ahead. The spot of her crash is still a site people come back to year after year.
8. The murder of Dr. Mary S. Sherman
Another murder ripe with conspiracy theories, many who’ve read the book "Dr. Mary’s Monkey "feel positive that there were some mighty fishy things going on in Dr. Sherman’s lab--and that a lot of people had motivation to cover it up…look it up and let me know what you think!
9. Day the Civil War Stopped
Every year, Civil War History buffs reenact this very unique moment in the war when generals from the Confederate and Union sides agreed to a brief truce to allow a fallen Lieutenant a proper burial, complete with Masonic rights.
10. Myrtles Plantation
Known as the most haunted plantation in Louisiana, there are countless spooky and strange stories that people have experienced by simply spending one night in this place. It looks inviting I know!
11. Nick Cage tomb
This one still has me scratching my head. Perhaps we’ll never know why Nicholas Cage built this strange tomb in New Orleans and what his actual plans are with it looking forward, but, here it is.
12. Vote for the Crook, it’s important
While politics in Louisiana have always been unique, perhaps the strangest moment was when the winning political slogan for a governor was "Vote for the Crook, It’s Important". I guess that’s what happens when your two options are former KKK member and individual mired by corruption scandals.
Which of these do you think is the most strange? What other events would you add to the list? Let us know in the comments below!
